What is the difference between the Executive Service Corps of Cincinnati (ESCC) and the Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE)?
ESCC (Executive Service Corps of Cincinnati) and SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) have similar sounding names; both groups are based on the principle that volunteer business people have a wealth of experience and expertise that should not be wasted. Here is the difference: ESCC serves only nonprofits; SCORE serves only small, for profit businesses. SCORE receives funding from the United States Small Business Administration. ESCC is supported by foundation and corporate grants, individuals’ contributions, and revenue generated by client fees.

Why does ESCC require funding and from where does it come?
ESCC is a nonprofit and complies with the requirements of the IRS 501(c)(3) rules. All contributions to ESCC are tax deductible to those donors who must pay taxes. It is locally operated and funded through contributions from individuals, corporations, grants from a wide range of foundations, occasional fundraisers, and client fees. Funds are used to support a small office staff and typical overhead expenses (rent, heat, light, phones, etc.) ESCC volunteer consultants are not compensated for their time either directly or indirectly.

What are the qualifications of ESCC consultants?
All ESCC consultants must have senior business experience which is transferable to the nonprofit organizations with which we work. Although some members are still employed, most are retired executives, managers, entrepreneurs and professionals who have chosen to donate their time and expertise to help community service organizations improve their effectiveness. ESCC assigns its members, according to their skills, to work on specific projects. Additionally, all our members receive training in working with nonprofits and related specialty areas.

Why are fees charged if volunteers do the work?
While it is true that ESCC volunteers are never paid, there are still nominal overhead expenses for office space and the administrative needs of our organization. Because the needs are small, fees for services are also small and are used entirely to help defray the costs of operations. Costs to clients are negotiated according to ability to pay and the nature of the work that is to be done. No organization has ever been denied service because of inability to pay. Although funds are received from other sources, they are not always adequate to cover all expenses. Initial meetings are cost-free to clients.
